![]() Katheryn Sarah Needham, UK/ Australia: “I took part in the course of the elementary level and I studied in the mini-group. The content of the language course and teaching materials were good; the teaching was excellent. Natasha, my teacher, was very good and patient. I was a bit underneath my level but too experienced for beginners. But now I think I am more confident in speaking. My host woman was lovely and very welcoming. She worked hard at talking to me even though I speak little Russian. I would definitely recommend her to other students. She is a very special person. Our cultural program was excellent. Kizhi was great and rafting was fantastic fun. The volunteers were excellent. Andrej was great and full of fun and Kira was very sweet. Also, organizations of the program were great and administrators were very helpful. I will recommend this program because it is competitively priced and Petrozavodsk is a nice city to study in”. Stefan Trummer, Germany:“The teacher was interested in improving our Russian language ability. She made a great job with mix of vocabulary, grammar and modern methods (we watched films, which we could include our education program). We have our own book and we can make our own noticed. I was glad to live in my family. Our volunteers also made a very good job. I will recommend the courser and we have many opportunities to know the Karelian culture”. Veronica Heljic Vrecko, Croatia:“I studied 2 weeks in the standard group in August. The teaching was excellent; we learned a lot of vocabulary, new words and modern sentences. I loved teaching materials, and I liked the fact that it wasn’t all by the book. My teacher was amazing! So full of life and patience! I liked topics we discussed. Methods of teaching were very active and interesting. I think my vocabulary grew a lot, I’ve learned so much! I think I could do more grammar though…There was very friendly atmosphere in the class. Everything was great; I had nothing to worry about while staying in Petrozavodsk. I would recommend this program to other people because it is nice to hang out with people from other countries, and the study program was great! Thank you for everything! Wish you all the best”. Martina Castelletti, Switzerland:“I took part in the standard program in August. The content of the course was excellent. I wanted to talk a lot and so we did! Nastja was excellent! A really nice teacher! She helped us a lot! My family was really good. They were very nice and kind with me. The volunteers were good. The most helpful was Kira. They were all nice but sometimes they talked too fast! Everything was good and well organized. I liked the program and it has been useful. I will recommend this program because it’s a great experience and above all because you can really improve the language. I have no doubt I improved my Russian language skills”. Hanna Leena Holopainen, Finland:“I learned a lot here. The best was that I could practice my spoken Russian. I learned many new words. I liked the family I stayed with, they helped me a lot. And I think that when they started to trust me they were very friendly :) I like Kizhi Island a lot, but the museum of Rеgional was a little bit disappointed to me. I think that volunteers were very nice. Andrej and Aleksej were the most familiar to me; I spoke a lot with them. Keep on going that way”! Students said in July, 2010
![]() Jan–Jouke Mulder, the Netherlands: “The content of the language course was good, but I wish more out of the box speaking. What else, I think the teaching was excellent. Atmosphere in the class was friendly, respectful and informal. It would be great if the teacher spoke English a bit but though managed to understand each other nicely. What I like most of all is the great friendly family, with whom we could always talk. I really enjoyed myself here. I would recommend the program at “Enjoy Russian” because it is really cheap and well organized in a nice part of Russia”. Julius Schwartzenberg, the Netherlands: “I took part in two week July course. Our language course included useful words and grammar. We used good audio and video materials. My living conditions were excellent. I was quite free to do what I want. I was also interesting to chart with the hostfamily. I had good cultural program and it was especially interesting to see Kizhi. All volunteers were very helpful; they did an amazing job working with such a large group. The organization and administration was very good. Comparing with what I have seen before in Russia. This is a very strong point of “Enjoy Russian”. I can speak more comfortably now. My active and passive vocabulary are bigger now”. Piret Koosa, Estonia: “I studied in mini-group of elementary level. Our teacher was nice and patient with us. My living conditions were excellent: very nice hostess, my room was also ok. What about the cultural program I only visited museums and I quite liked them. I like very much the personal attention given to each of the students. I like the program and also the city Ptz. I think it is very good possibility stay in a Russian family to practice the language. I am happy I decided to come!” Thomas Devos, Belgium: “I took summer Russian course of elementary level. I had a nice time here and I have learned a lot. I like the fact that we played games a bit, but I would like to learn more grammar (dative case). Our cultural program was excellent. We had a lot of choice and I saw beautiful things like Kizhi Island. The volunteers were very sociable and very helpful. I really like Agata and Victor, we’ve become friends. Living conditions were also good. I expected worse but I had a really nice apartment and a beautiful room. I would recommend this program to other people because it is a good program!” Eva Debruyne, Belgium: “During 2 weeks I haven't lean many new things but I have leaned how to use Russian in conversation! We had a lot of conversations in Russian and it is good to speak more fluently. Teaching materials were good and we had interesting creative exercises, but it would be great to study all the cases. My host family was excellent. Tatjana was very friendly and helped me to improve my Russian. I had good food and everything I wanted. The volunteers were excellent. Agata and Victor were very helpful and we practice Russian with them. I would recommend the language school “Enjoy Russian” to lots of people. It is good if you want to learn and to speak Russian and know Russian culture as well”. Stefan Gabler, Austria: “The Russian course was excellent. My teacher Alya was really great. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Atmosphere in the class was very good. I’m now able to communicate with my host family which was not possible at the beginning. I would recommend this program to other people”. Lesley Hogg, the USA: “I thought the material was well chosen and appropriate for each certificate level but I wish more difficult exercises in the 1st certificate level. All of my teachers were well-prepared, thoughtful, pleasant to work with and very understanding. I was really impressed with the quality of teaching and I looked forward to every lesson. I won the home stay jackpot! I could hot have asked for a more gracious, helpful, understanding or fun host. I also like that my host was also in her 20’s so we had a lot in common. The excursions I attended were great. I especially enjoyed Kivach. The variety of program was good and the volunteers were very friendly and helpful. They really helped us feel at home in Petrozavodsk. Ksysha spoke to fast but by the end of my stay I was able to keep up and understand her! I love this program! I definitely feel that my Russian improved in the 6 short weeks I was here. I will definitely recommend this program to other students at my university”. Emil Johansson, Sweden: “The content of the language course was excellent and teaching was very good and varied. I liked very good exercises and outside classes for all kind of people. I will recommend this program to other people because of small groups, friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to meet Russian volunteers”. Petra Steigerova, Czech Republic: “My teacher’s leading was excellent and the training course was logic and structured. The course was absolutely appropriate to my level. I'd like to thank Vera for the enjoyable classes and the present ;). I am happy I had a chance to spend two lovely weeks in Petrozavodsk. Thank you all for such work. I will definitely recommend “Enjoy Russian”. My Russian has significantly improved here”. Nina Hallenstvedt, Norway: “I took part in 2 week Russian course and I studied in the mini-group. Everything was excellent including teaching, living conditions and organizations of the program. Cultural program was also good. Alja is a very patient teacher, she is good at teaching and explaining. But sometimes I'd like to have a little bit more games instead of grammar. The atmosphere in the class as fun and friendly and I have learned a lot!” Student X: “Small group was excellent for learning the Russian language and students in my group were at the same level. Teaching was excellent: multiple teaching methods and good materials. May be it was a little bit too much information (but it can be also good – time will show). I lived in a nice family. For the beginner it was good to live in a family who speaks English and Finnish. I liked the cultural program, especially Kizhi was great. The volunteers were really nice and all of them was helpful. The program was very well organized from the very beginning (applying process). Thank you! My impression about the program is excellent, I would recommend it because of: homestay; good organization, talented teachers and excellent way to improve your Russian language skills!” Daniel Pinchock, the USA: “Both teachers were very friendly and helpful. They were able to help me understand without English. The games we played helped a lot with vocabulary. Living conditions were excellent – I couldn't ask for a better home stay. Kirill was so friendly and helpful I consider him family now. I didn't spend much time with the excursions. Volunteers were friendly but at times I felt uncomfortable with them. Dasha does an amazing job planning and preparing everything. Keep up the great work! My general impression about the program – excellent! At first I was concerned, but now I am considering returning. I am completely satisfied with my stay. The most valuable thing I got out of this trip is understanding. Everyone here is so helpful and friendly it helped to built my confidence about speaking”. Shivali Sitters, United Kingdom: “The content of the language course was excellent and really structured. The quality of handouts was very good. I had three teachers during the course, so I can say that the 2nd and the 3rd teachers did a brilliant work. Ivan and Nadezhda were undoubtedly the best family. They were so kind and so helpful. I had a lovely room in a great location. I can evaluate my progress in Russian as “очень хорошо”. I learned a lot from this Russian program and I really enjoyed it. There are so many interesting students here”. Gerald Kern, Austria: “It's a good program: excellent family, volunteers and organization. I like the Russian course. I studied in a group of basic level in July. My teachers were well prepared and patient, they explained everything very clear”. Luis Munoz De Laborde, Spain: “The Russian course was excellent. I have leaned very much. My teacher has help me very much, and has tied all time to get my interest in the subject of the lesson, many times she uses games to make the learning process easier. I visited Kizhi, Valaam, Kivach waterfall – very good experience and very good organization, but the excursion to St. Petersburg was organized badly. I like volunteers. Kira was very friendly and helpful. The organization and administration was excellent. Everything is great, the staff at the school is very friendly”. Victoria Mueller, Austria: “I took part in 4 week July course of basic level and I studied in mini-group. In the last week I feel tired and maybe it would be great to have one free day at the end of the course Atmosphere in the class was very, very, very :) I would recommend this program: 1. because of you Dasha I felt so comfortable and you took care about us all the time and I knew that you will always help us. 2. Petrozavodsk is one of the nicest cities I have ever been in. I like walking around here. The other students were of the same age like me. Thank you very much!” Georgia Forth, United Kingdom: “The teaching was good and the content of the language course was excellent. I had a good family, kind and helpful. They made an effort to speak Russian to me. The cultural program was good, but it could be less expensive. Our volunteers were helpful and friendly. Tanya and Victor in particular made a real effort to spend time with us. I would recommend your Russian program to other people”. Hellen Lilley, United Kingdom: “The Russian language course was very good, especially near the end when we studied idiomatic phrases and colloquial language because that is something we don’t study at home. Both teachers were very good and they explained things well without speaking any English in class, which was good. My family was excellent. Valentina took me to swim in lakes and to a relative's party at a dacha and to her son's wedding. I felt very well looked after. I most enjoyed the excursions to Valaam and Kivach because they were interesting and the the tours were in Russian. The picnic with international food was fun. Some volunters were very helpful and gave advice about Petrozavodsk and helped my Russian. The organization was excellent. The only thing I was not happy about that I applied for a normal-size group but it turned out that not enough people had applied so I had to pay extra for a mini-group. But adapt from this everything was fine. I would highly recommend this Russian program because it is very good. I really enjoyed the whole visit!” Rolf Kyburz, Switzerland: “I took part in July course of elementary level. Unfortunately there was no course according to my level. As for me it was very difficult to follow the lessons, but teaching was good. Living conditions also were good, but I had no TV-set at home to watch Russian TV. The volunteers are excellent. Thank you for the patience!”
Agia Thomassen, Belgium: “We learned a lot about Russia, traditions, etc. It was interesting and we of course improved our Russian. The teachers were good, nice. They did their best to explain if we didn't understand some grammar or vocabulary. They always made lessons more interesting for us. The book we had was nice and well constructed. We also saw some films, which was nice. I think I have learned more new words and now I can speak Russian more fluently. The living conditions were very good. The host family tried to make me feel at home. I liked the excursions to Kizhi and Kivach. They were really interesting. The excursion to st. Petersburg was nice, but there were some e problems. Rafting and bowling was fun. We had a great time there ;) t would be nice to go to a theater. I liked the program, the city. I learned a lot, not only Russian but also about Russia. I would recommend this program because it is a good way to learn Russian: you are busy speaking, reading, writing Russian not only at the lessons but also out of the classroom.”
Nicoleta Marinescu, Romania: "I am glad we covered so much material. But still it would be great to have more supporting material. I feel like I need to go over it again to be really able to use most of the words fluently. I really liked the materials we used. I really appreciated the variety of materials used in the second part of the Russian course. I liked going rafting, going to Kizhi, to the waterfall Kivach. The volunteers were really helpful and friendly.Organization and administration were excellent. I appreciate how nice and helpful eveyone was. It’s a great learning experience". Student X: "The Russian language course was good. Leaving conditions were good as well. Both teachers showed genuine interest in their students and their progress which is the most important thing. Practicing song and poems is a good idea. It was interesting to visit the historical museum, the guide was pretty good. Kira was the most helpful of the volunteers. I will recommend this program to other people. All that was promised, was also provided".

![]() Haydee Antunano, the USA: “I came here to have a 4-week group course. The teachers were good. I was very clear that their intentions were good and they really wanted us to understand the material. I found that the handouts used in class were helpful. The atmosphere in the class was friendly and comfortable. I adore my host family; they’re absolutely wonderful and made me feel at home from the start. I’m very happy of my living situation. The volunteers were absolutely lovely and charming. They were happy to help us when needed and pointed us in the right direction. So was the administration. Everyone was helpful.”
Julianna Flanagan, the USA: “The program was great – I really feel like I got out of it what I put in. I love Petrozavodsk and everyone involved in the program has been great. The teachers did their best to work with our different backgrounds of studying and ways in which we wanted to learn. I love my family; they are the perfect combination of friendly and interesting but also give me plenty of my own space. They have been helpful and so interesting to talk to. I liked he cultural program. I liked visiting Karelian towns, museums, countryside. Banya is something I recommend a thousand times! Every student should go! The volunteers were great! It was great to talk to Russian university students who were just interested in us as we were in them. Ksushia was so helpful in every activity and really cared to make sure I understood everything. A main criteria for this program was that I could afford it. I thank everyone for providing such an opportunity to me.”
Jeroen Huizinga, Switzerland: “Our group took a month course in Petrozavodsk. The town is located in a beautiful place at the lake, people are always nice and you can always talk to them. I felt fine at my apartment. The administration of the course was good and very helpful and we learned a lot, the teachers did their best, the atmosphere in the class was always friendly and we all got along well.”
Dominic Degen, Switzerland: “I had an excellent time not only at school but also at house, in the city, in Karelia in general. I’m very happy about the fact that I lived close to the city center so it was in quick access. I liked the excursions but it’s sad that we were under time pressure while visiting Kizhi. As a result now I feel more safe in Russian.”
Susanne Schoerghofer, Austria: “I came to Petrozavodsk to take an individual course of Russian. What I like about the town is that its location fits me all right; it’s rather close to the EU. And the school is very good. The learning process satisfied me; the content of the lessons was interesting and varied, the teacher used lots of video materials. And I really learned a lot of new words.
I visited the Museum of Fine Arts. It contains a really interesting collection of older and newer art.
I like visiting new places but the location of the town is likely to make me come here again. I would recommend this program because it is interesting, varied and well organized. Petrozavodsk is a nice city to spend your free time here.”
Petri Lonka, Finland: “This isn’t my first time in Russia, I like this country, its people and culture. This year I have undertaken a Russian course in Petrozavodsk in the school “Enjoy Russian” and you know, I’ll come back next year! I have taken a 2-week individual tuition and am impressed both by the teaching and the cultural program. My teacher Natalia is very experienced and capable, very friendly and described all the rules and structures, her methods were excellent; I guess she had made a lot of homework. So I made as big progress in two weeks as I can ever reach!
The activities and the overall administration of the program was on a high level, volunteers were all nice and helpful, especially Vitja (Victor). What I liked most is the trip to Kizhi; it’s awesome.
I will definitely recommend this school as Petrozavodsk is a cozy and not big town with lots of historical sights.”
Christoph Lenz, Switzerland: “I took a two-week one-on-one program in Petrozavodsk. And I think I took a huge leap in Russian thanks to my teacher and communicating with lots of Russian people. My teacher was very friendly, she did a very good job.
I liked my family very much. I felt comfortable from the beginning.
The cultural activities were very good also. The museum was very interesting and rafting was a great trip and a nice occasion to see a bit of the countryside. I would recommend both excursions to the students. The volunteers did a very good job as well, but I was with Victor a bit more.
Petrozavodsk is the best option, I believe, because I think at this school a student doesn’t only learn Russian well but also gets a good impression of the Russian people and country.”

James Brown, Ireland: “I took a two-week individual tuition at the School “Enjoy Russian”. The teaching was well structured so I feel I have improved my knowledge of grammar and rules. I would like to thank my teacher Natasha for all her help and patience; her work was excellent and, what I like, thorough. We spoke Russian all the time which forced me to think in the language. I’m happy with the improvements I’ve made and the quality of teaching. Concerning cultural program...well it was good! The town tour was a good introduction to the city. Ksenia (volunteer) was energetic and enthusiastic town guide. I felt she loves her town. I met few volunteers but they all were lovely and extemely friendly. All the museum excursions game me clear impression about the atmosphere of the town; All of them were very interesting. I think it’s good value for money compared with Moscow alternatives and I was very happy with my teacher.”
Ashley Anne Donnan, Ireland: “Everything was really great!! I spent the best 2 months in Russia! Concerning teaching the School “Enjoy Russian” is perfect. The Russian language program was great, I was able to decide what I was interested in studying and the teachers always found interesting materials to use. What I liked was having Friday as a film day with Masha, my second teacher. That was exciting! I felt really comfortable talking to her and enjoyed discussing lots of different things. My first teacher was Elza. She helped me a lot! I liked working on vocabulary with her; it was really useful. I believe my conversation skills have improved, but I still have a long way to go.
The program was organized very well, the coordinators were always helpful and friendly.
Although I came here to work and studied most of the time I would have liked more interesting excursions (I did enjoy the art museum!) and socializing with volunteers. It seems in summer they are more available. So keep it up!”
Peter Ziegelwanger, Austria: “I came to Petrozavodsk only for a week for an individual course but I fell in love with this small town! And I love my family. They were excellent hosts; I really want to return! The infrastructure is good and the town is hospitable and nice. Though I wish there would be more contacts with locals and more various cultural programs. I believe it’s prefect in summer but I guess winter is not the time for culture=)
My teacher was very helpful and patient so my progress completely lived up to my expectations. But some Russian words are so long!!! The atmosphere and materials were also all right. I would tell everyone about the school.” Anni Juvonen, Finland: “That was great! I spent in the school “Enjoy Russian” only a month but we did have fun! My first teacher was very good and I enjoyed the lessons much though there were parts that were too hard for me. But the whole atmosphere was very friendly and I believe I activated my Russian a bit! The cultural program was all right but not very versatile; I suppose coming here at summer time gives more options.”
David Schlutz, Germany: "I would definitely recommend the Russian language school “Enjoy Russian”. First I evaluate the organization of the program at a very high level. The administration has solved all the problems concerning my stay in Petrozavodsk very fast and without any consequences. So I could only concentrate on Russian. I took a 2-week basic program and it left up to my expectations all right, especially the 2nd week. My teacher was very open-minded and we had a lot of fun together besides her methods are rather appropriate but I wish it would be more cooperation with students concerning the lessons schedule. Masha used a lot of audio and video materials and all the facilities were all right so I felt the progress in my proficiency thought it could be bigger but it’s my fault)) I’d like to thank my host family. It was very carrying! My overall impression is positive, the program was well organized and each student is treated individually. The excursions were good and we were always informed in time about any new activities and changes, everyone was helping and supportive."
Silvia Strobl, Austria: “I spent a month in Petrozavodsk and I’m very happy having spent my time here with “Enjoy Russian”! I’m very thankful to my Russian language teachers, actually I had two teachers because I took two programs; in a mini-group and individual. Both Natasha and Anna are high-class. What I liked most is that much teachers’ attention was focused on me what allowed for my improvement. We used various materials for studies and I really wasn’t bored. It was quite intense being in Russian speaking environment so my vocabulary expanded considerably. Besides the organization of the group was excellent, the work of the Russian school is very professional. As far as living conditions are concerned, I think that my host family did a very good job. I felt very comfortable there. By the way, the volunteers were very helpful and friendly.”
Silvio Laveder, Italy: "The content of the Russian language course was excellent as well as teaching. My best wishes to my teacher! The study book is easy to use and well structured. I would have maybe add a little dictionary with the words used at the lessons. In my family there are very easygoing people, interesting experience to live with them. The volunteers were very good. It was very nice of them to help us learning about Russian language and culture. Organization and administration of program were excellent. Dasha and the staff were always available to help. I would recommend this Russian language school to there students because Karelia is a good place to study Russian, just a night train away from St, Petersburg, but far enough to avoid meeting people who speak English. The price of School and life is cheaper. Real life of a not too big city!"
Claes Gustav von Heiroth, Finland: “My program was entirely private. I tried my best to lose myself in studying and everything around me, the atmosphere itself contributed much. First it was hard for me to adapt especially concerning language matters as the flow of information is impressive but the lessons were well-structured and logic so I got used to the intense learning pace pretty fast. I point out that there were no problems in organizing the program, everything was under control. I love my accommodation; I had probably the best location in town and the room fulfilled my expectations. I’m satisfied and glad to have the Russian language course certificate. I’m planning to come back here soon.” |
