KareliaMay - hot season is coming soon ;)05/31 2010
05/31 2010 After a few days of cold and rain warm and sunny days have come back to the capital of Karelia. The nature is getting ready for the foreign guests of Petrozavodsk who will be learning Russian in our Russian language school.
We really are very excited and hope that she’ll be happy with our friendly town and people and of course with the Russian lessons. Haydee will definitely have many opportunities to master her Russian in Petrozavodsk while communicating with her host family, volunteers, and her new Russian friends. 05/24 2010
Last week was like a gift for all of us. It is very seldom when May in Karelia is so hot; to get sunburnt people usually need to go to the south to lie under the southern sun. But now it seems all the locals have been in the resorts of the Black Sea, Turkey or Egypt – so sunburnt they are! They together with their families and friends go to the country to enjoy the weather at their dachas; those who don’t have such an opportunity visit the town beaches of the lake Onego and the river Lososinka to suntan a bit.
![]() Petrozavodsk has become even friendlier is such a green summer dress. The nature is greatful for the weather as well; everywhere the buds of burd cherry trees (cheryomuha), lilac trees (siren’) are starting blossoming out. Even the buds of apple trees and yellow acacia are opening! Usually they blossom out in June here.
![]() So the summer has come! And it’s expected to be as hot as it’s now. So the students who will come to our Russian language school this summer will enjoy all the delights of the season all right. Next week the second group of new Russian language teachers is finishing the studies and we are almost ready for the students starting the Russian course on the 7th of June. The team of the school is waiting for them with eager anticipation.

At last summer has come to Karelia. That’s really good news for the seeking for heat locals. All over its territory it’s hot and sunny, people go to the country to spend time with families and friends making barbeques and shashlyks (that’s a meat meal, Russian specialty that takes origins from the Caucasis region. The pieces of pork or beef are pickled for a night in a special marinade, sauce and then are strung to special sticks and cooked in the open air on a brazier); they sunbathe and enjoy perfect weather.
![]() Russian language school “Enjoy Russian” is preparing for the first summer group of students. The program starts on the 7th of June and we are expecting Russian language learners from many countries: Switzerland (The University of Basel), Austria, The UK, Finland. We actually have much to do; prepare the families and teachers for the new season, negotiate the changes in the cultural programs, ...By the way, the second group of new Russian language teachers are finishing their studies in several weeks to be ready to meet the students in summer.
It seems to be a really hot season and we are anticipating new friends and impressions...

Last weekends there was one of the most important and favorite holidays for every Russian. We were celebrating the 9th of May, the Day of Victory over Nazism Germany in 1945. Every year on this day in almost every Russian town and city the parade is organized; the locals come to watch it at the main squares and welcome the veterans, gift them flowers and thank for their heroic deed, they come to the memorial of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Fire.
![]() Of course the most colorful and impressive parade is held in Moscow at the Red Square. This year the parade was visited by the representatives of many countries and the troops of foreign countries used to be the allies of the Soviet Union (France, the UK, the USA, Poland etc.) had the chance to march along the Red Square.
![]() After the parades people together with their families and friends make most of the time and go out at the streets of towns and entertain themselves. In the evening everyone may watch the salute. The salute in Petrozavodsk is at the embankment of the Onego lake as a rule.
![]() Last week Anke, the student of “Enjoy Russian” from Germany, visited the Museum of Regional and found out many interesting facts about the history of Karelia. She together with her host family also came to see the Kivatch Waterfall that is not so far from the town. We believe that was a great experience for her. Unfortunately Anke was here only for two weeks and has already left us but we hope she won’t forget this time spent in Petrozavodsk and the certificate about the Russian course will remind her about our Russian language school ;)

At the weekends the 1st of May was celebrated in Russia. The holiday has a long history and has remained as a heritage back to the Soviet Union. Historically on this day people would go out at the streets and participate in communist demonstrations and meetings. They would go down the main streets of towns and cities with red flags and posters of Lenin. That was the day of all the working people. The motto of the holiday was: Peace, Labour, May (Mir, Trud, Mai). That was a day off and if the 1st of May was on Saturday or Sunday people get one extra day off on Monday.
![]() Currently that is just the holiday of spring and new life. Of course, the communist party arranges demonstrations for its followers every year but for most of people that’s just a long weekend usually of three days when they may go to the country to their dachas to start preparing for a new dacha season. ![]() Our student Anke is a very active woman passionate with art and she decided to spend the holidays sightseeing in St. Petersburg. We hope she had great time having excursion around churches and cathedrals of the City on the Neva. As soon as Anke is a real theatre-goer she enjoyed 2 performances there. Of course the excursion and the performances were in Russian ;) Anke has already seen a lot of places in Petrozavodsk as well. She was impressed by the Museum of Fine Arts. Anke has visited concerts and performances held on the stages of the Music and Drama Theatre and Tvorcheskaya Masterskaya. She has one week more in Petrozavodsk so there’s enough time for her to visit more interesting places… |
